Either for financial or personal reasons, a lot of people prefer to decorate their own homes and while painting and decorating is not in any way an easy task, most people should be able to tackle it if they are well-prepared.
Whilst choosing the wallpaper and choosing the colour of paint can be tricky, it shouldn’t cause you an injury; but using ladders, to hang paper and paint ceilings, often causes mishaps if people are not being careful.
Ceilings
Step-ladders, or ideally a work platform, are the best methods for painting a ceiling. Having that platform to place the paint and equipment on is vital. Never try to paint a ceiling whilst on a chair, it’s too easy to topple off and you will never make a good job of it.
The step allows you to work without struggling to hold paint and roller, but it is important to remember to reposition the ladder rather than lean out otherwise you can topple off.
It’s also advisable not to paint directly above your head. Not only is this uncomfortable, you can also drip paint into your eyes which is unpleasant and can lad to a fall.
Walls
A steady step-ladder is also a must for hanging paper. Having something stable to stand or even sit on as you align the paper makes it so much easier to get it straight. Its best to have the paper passed up to you, rather than try to climb with wet paper up the ladder no-handed.
Stairs
Attempting to use ladders improperly on stairs is a common cause of accidents. If you need to work on the stairs you will need a combination ladder or platform that is designed to do so. These can be adjusted at different lengths at either end to ensure they are stable on the stairs. They normally also have a large platform to work on to prevent the risk of leaning out or attempting to carry items up the ladder.
Exterior
For any exterior decorating and extension ladder is going to be the only solution for reaching the upper levels. These should be used with care and properly sited at the right angle. For any job like this it is advisable to work with somebody, not only can they foot the ladder but they can help you haul up tools and materials, rather than you having to climb the ladder with them in your hands.
